What is in your shower water?
Here is a closer look at the elements that can be present in UK shower water, and how each one can affect your hair and skin.
Chlorine
UK water companies are required to keep chlorine in the supply, typically 0.5 mg/l or less at the tap. It's safe to drink, but in every shower it can leave hair and skin feeling dry or stripped, and speed up colour fade.
Hard-water minerals
Over 60% of UK homes have hard water-in London and the South Est often above 250 mg/l of calcium carbonate. These minerals react with shampoo and leave a residue on hair and skin, which is why lather is poor and hair feels coated.
Heavy metals and pipe impurities
Copper and lead can enter water from older household pipework- lead pipes were banned in 1970 but remain in some pre-1970 homes. Copper in particular binds to hair and can cause brassiness or green tones in blonde and colour treated hair.
Sediment and particles
Fine rust and grit can come off older pipes, and more so after mains work in your area. It settles on skin and hair and can add to dullness and roughness.

Why Filter Your Water?
Your beauty routine starts before shampoo, conditioner or skincare. It starts with the water you use every day. Across many areas of the UK, shower water can contain chlorine, hard water minerals, sediment and trace impurities. While UK tap water is generally safe, these elements can still affect how your hair and skin look and feel after showering.
If your hair feels dry, dull, frizzy or difficult to manage, or your skin feels tight and uncomfortable after a shower, your water could be part of the problem.
Signs your water may be the issue:
- Dry, frizzy hair
- Dull, lifeless hair
- Tight, dry skin
- Uncomfortable after shower
